February Kindergarten Art

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you swimmingly as we dive into the wonders of creativity and imagination at Erickson Elementary School! We're delighted to share an exciting art project that our kindergarteners have been working on: crafting Porthole Suncatchers adorned with construction paper sea creatures inside, using tissue paper and contact paper!

The Porthole Suncatcher Project: Our young artists have been busy exploring the depths of their creativity by crafting Porthole Suncatchers for our upcoming Ocean-Themed Portfolio Night Art Show. These enchanting creations will not only brighten up your windows but also transport you to an underwater wonderland filled with colorful sea creatures.

Project Details:

  • Materials: Students will be using a combination of tissue paper, contact paper, circular frames, and construction paper to create their Porthole Suncatchers.
  • Process: Guided by our talented art teacher, Mrs. Clay, students learned how to layer tissue paper and construction paper sea creatures inside their porthole frames using contact paper, creating a captivating satellite effect.
  • Educational Component: Through this project, students will develop fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and an appreciation for art and creativity.

We're incredibly excited to showcase the creativity and imagination of our kindergarteners at our Ocean-Themed Portfolio Night Art Show. Through art, we aim to not only nurture their artistic talents but also foster a love for exploration, discovery, and self-expression.

  What are Infographics? Infographics are a way to make learning information EXCITING! 4th grade started making their infographics!  Students are researching a topic that they are interested in, finding facts about that topic and presenting it in a FUN way!  Some websites that the students are using are Britannica Encyclopedia Online and National Geographic website.  The student will then look for pictures that represent their facts.  The next couple of weeks, they will put all their findings together in a way that makes learning FUN!

Library: First Grade Fiction Read Alouds

First graders learned about the 5 characteristics of Fiction in October!  We learned about character, setting, plot, point of view and theme. We start talking about the characteristic and reading the book and discussing what the Fiction characteristic is in the story.  Some questions asked were: If the setting was different would the story make sense?  If there wasn’t a problem in the story would it be a good book to read? We learned about…  Characters in the book titled Nobody Hugs A Cactus by Carter Goodrich Setting in the book titled: Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett Plot in the book titled Bark, George by Jules Feiffer Point of View in titled: Seriously Cinderella is so Annoying by  Trisha Speed Shaskan Theme in the book titled: My Friend Rabbit by Eric Rohmann

What's happening in Kindergarten Library!

What is a Problem and Solution? In Kindergarten, students learned about problems and solutions!  We learned different terms that represent the word “problem”.  Some examples include “worry, “difficult” and “mess”.  For the word “solution” we found other terms like “fix”, “solve” and “clear up”.   We discussed problems that could happen - a cat up in a tree or a bike broken and how we can find a solution for those problems.  We concluded the lesson with a book that had a problem and how the character solved that problem!  Sometimes we came up with a different solution!
