Dear Erickson Families: 

November was a great month in music class! Students spent a lot of time in music class practicing songs in preparation for the Veterans Day Assembly, which took place on November 10th. At this assembly, students in every grade had the opportunity to sing with their classmates. Everyone did a wonderful job of performing and showcasing their work in music class! 
                                                  
Currently, students in all grades are learning songs in preparation for our Winter Sing Along at Erickson. The Winter Sing Along is an assembly with the entire school that takes place in the gym on December 22nd.

At the Winter Sing Along, each grade will get the chance to perform a song or multiple songs that they have been learning to sing in music class for the rest of the school. I will be recording and sending home the audio from this event in the December newsletter! 

Each month, the music class newsletter will highlight a different grade level. I will include general information at the beginning of each newsletter for all, and highlight a grade level after that. This month, the music class newsletter will be highlighting 5th grade! 

Did you know that the Bloomingdale Public Library allows you to check out a wide variety of musical instruments to use at home? A lot of the instruments offered are used in our music class, and checking them out through the library allows your child to use a musical instrument at home without having to buy it!

5th Grade Music - November 2023

Singing
5th graders learned the following songs and performed them at the Erickson Veterans Day Assembly:

- "The Star Spangled Banner" 
- "Fifty Nifty United States"
- "Erickson School Song" 

Playing Instruments
5th graders were reintroduced to the boomwhacker, a musical instrument pictured below. To practice on the boomwhackers, students played along to various songs, including: 


- "Spooky Scary Skeletons" 
- "Monster Mash"
- "Baby Shark" 
- "Viva la Vida" 
- "Dance Monkey" 
- "Heat Waves" 
- "Light 'em Up" 
- "I Want You Back" 

Genres of Music
5th grade students learned about the birth of hip-hop as a music genre and listened to a couple of examples of hip-hop. Students also learned which instruments are commonly used in hip-hop music, including the drum set, electric bass, piano, and synthesizer.

  What are Infographics? Infographics are a way to make learning information EXCITING! 4th grade started making their infographics!  Students are researching a topic that they are interested in, finding facts about that topic and presenting it in a FUN way!  Some websites that the students are using are Britannica Encyclopedia Online and National Geographic website.  The student will then look for pictures that represent their facts.  The next couple of weeks, they will put all their findings together in a way that makes learning FUN!

Library: First Grade Fiction Read Alouds

First graders learned about the 5 characteristics of Fiction in October!  We learned about character, setting, plot, point of view and theme. We start talking about the characteristic and reading the book and discussing what the Fiction characteristic is in the story.  Some questions asked were: If the setting was different would the story make sense?  If there wasn’t a problem in the story would it be a good book to read? We learned about…  Characters in the book titled Nobody Hugs A Cactus by Carter Goodrich Setting in the book titled: Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett Plot in the book titled Bark, George by Jules Feiffer Point of View in titled: Seriously Cinderella is so Annoying by  Trisha Speed Shaskan Theme in the book titled: My Friend Rabbit by Eric Rohmann

What's happening in Kindergarten Library!

What is a Problem and Solution? In Kindergarten, students learned about problems and solutions!  We learned different terms that represent the word “problem”.  Some examples include “worry, “difficult” and “mess”.  For the word “solution” we found other terms like “fix”, “solve” and “clear up”.   We discussed problems that could happen - a cat up in a tree or a bike broken and how we can find a solution for those problems.  We concluded the lesson with a book that had a problem and how the character solved that problem!  Sometimes we came up with a different solution! Some of the books we read were: The Stray Dog  by Marc Simont Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty got Back Up Again by Dan Santat
